You may be starting to realize that you may have been neglecting your teeth all these years and now it is time to deal with those nagging dental problems while they still can be fixed.

In this article there are two areas that you may want to focus on. First you should ask yourself am I experiencing any of the common dental issues facing seniors. If so where can I find affordable dental coverage that will allow me to go to the dentist when needed?

What are some of the common dental problems that you should be aware of?

1. Are you noticing some yellowing around the edges of your teeth? This is probably plaque forming. In its early stages plaque is not that harmful but left alone this can lead to some serious dental problems.

If you have been diligent through the years with brushing, flossing and rinsing that has been your best defense against the formation of plaque. But over and above those good dental habits most people don’t realize the importance of regular cleanings at the dentist. Twice a year cleanings at the dentist can stop plaque in its tracks.

2. Tooth sensitivity is an irritating dental issue for many seniors. Because of the large number of medicines most seniors don’t realize that sensitivity can be a side effect of some medications.

Tooth sensitivity can be painful for some seniors. This is because of the eroding enamel through the years which can expose the underlying nerves under the enamel.

The best action you can take on your own is brush with a fluoride based toothpaste and to use a fluoride mouthwash each day. If you are still experiencing pain after a period of time it is time to go see the dentist.

3. Bleeding gums should be of special concern for seniors experiencing this dental problem. This condition may be a predictor of more serious health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. It also can progress to a more serious dental condition called periodontal disease.

All seniors should be on alert for bleeding gums and schedule a dental appointment to be on the safe side.
