Located in Kitchi Gammi Park, Brighton Beach is known for its smooth stones, crashing waves and stunning views of Lake Superior. It’s a popular destination for picnicking, sunbathing and relaxing in hammocks. The best times to visit are sunrise and sunset.

Watching the ships is the highlight of a trip to Canal Park. While you’re there, check out the many shops and restaurants; the free Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center & Park; and games and concerts at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center and Amsoil Arena. Hike to Ely’s Peak for spectacular panoramic views of the city and Lake Superior by accessing the Superior Hiking Trail at 123rd Avenue West on the Munger State Trail and traveling east to the Magney-Snively trailhead. The total distance is 4.3 miles. More information is available at shta.org.

Best Park — Gooseberry Falls: According to the website, Gooseberry Falls is the gateway to the North Shore. It is known for its spectacular waterfalls, river gorge, Lake Superior shoreline, Civilian Conservation Corps log and stone structures, and north woods wildlife. Listen to the thunderous roar of the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls of the Gooseberry River as it plummets through a rocky gorge. Watch for waves, ships, or the moon rise on Lake Superior from an ancient lava flow known as the Picnic Flow.

This five-story stone tower on the city hillside overlooks the Duluth Harbor and St. Louis Bay. It was dedicated by Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha of Norway in 1939. Stroll through the Japanese garden, which features thousands of flowers and a peace bell gifted from Duluth’s sister city, Ohara, Japan.
