Telemetry Travel Nursing Jobs: Roles and Responsibilities

Senate okays universal healthcare bill

If you are not familiar with what telemetry travel nursing is, then you must have a ton of questions like “What is telemetry nursing like?” or “What can I expect from a telemetry unit?”. Well, here are some of the roles and responsibilities of nurses who have Telemetry Travel Nursing Jobs:

What are the duties of a telemetry nurse?

Telemetry nurses monitor their patients through electronic signals and respond to any changes in cardiac rhythm. Their patients are those with preexisting heart conditions, elderly patients, obese patients, diabetics, and transfers from the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Room.

  1. Documenting all of the changes in the patient’s condition and behavior.

One of your duties is to monitor and document all of the changes in the patient’s condition and behavior. This is your chance to communicate with your patient to see if their condition is improving or not.

  1. Performing laboratory work.

Physicians must determine the causal link of the illness that is structural damage to the heart, dress-related, or other irregularities, especially if they are dealing with a patient who has an acute cardiac patient. Because of that, they rely on the lab work that the telemetry nurses would do. The lab work includes blood tests, chest x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, and the like.

  1. Assisting the physicians in customizing treatment plans.

Telemetry nurses assist in documentation and custom treatment plans because physicians have to manage 20 or more patients per shift.

  1. Carrying out treatment plans

Nurses are expected to regularly check on a patient’s medication and a treatment plan because most of the time, the patients are only allowed some light walking.

  1. Administering medication

As a nurse, you are required to fill out all the pharmaceutical requests and administer them as they need, making sure that they get the right dosage and are actually taking the medication to make them get better quicker.

  1. Performing emergency treatment

Though it seems that documenting, hustling to and from rooms, and coordinating is what a nurse mainly does, in the back of your mind you have to always be ready. There could be patients that are wheeled into the hospital who need immediate care or there could be a major shift in a patient’s condition, either way, you are going to have to be prepared for anything and everything.

  1. Educating patients on diagnoses and tests

As a nurse, it is your duty and responsibility to answer the questions that your patient may or may not have for you. You need to have patience, and a great bedside manner when answering their questions to slowly ease the patient since heart conditions are very terrifying.

  1. Speaking to the family

To better explain the condition of the patient, you as a nurse are expected to inform them of any critical shifts in their health or diagnosis, especially if the patient is a minor.

  1. Helping the patient in maintaining physical exercise and proper diet

You are responsible for ensuring that your patients know when to exercise and when to stay in bed while they are under your care. A short walk up and down the stairs gets the blood flow and boosts their mood, depending on your patient’s condition.

Telemetry Travel Nursing Responsibilities:

  1. Looking for Arrhythmias, Cardiac Baseline Changes and Abnormalities

Nurses should be able to determine any sort of sign of arrhythmias, cardiac baseline changes, and other abnormalities in that field. They are going to interpret the EKG strip by noting the rate, rhythm, axis, hypertrophy, and ST segment.

  1. Using Electronic Equipment to Monitor Patients

Being able to read the EKG strip is one of the functions that distinguish the telemetry nurses from the other RNs because learning to read a strip of paper that is just full of squiggly lines that represent heart function takes a lot of training.

  1. Performing the Stress Tests

Stress tests are used to evaluate the patient’s heart rhythm, breathing, and blood pressure. This would actively make the heart work harder and pump more blood. These would be recorded by electrodes that are strapped to the patient’s chest.

  1. Responding to Irregularities

Reacting to the irregularities in an urgent manner is needed to protect the patient since you will be dealing with patients with illnesses that need urgent care.
Telemetry nurses are mostly involved with patients who have heart conditions and typically work in critical-care units. Alongside all the mentioned duties and responsibilities, you also have to fulfill the responsibilities of a registered nurse.
